Fire alarm systems: what to consider

This section brings together the panels, field devices and spares needed to build or maintain a fire detection system in commercial and multi-occupancy buildings. It is split into two areas:

Conventional fire systems: CFP panels with compatible detectors, call points, sounders and bells.

Core components

Every system starts with a control panel that monitors the circuits and drives the alarms. Automatic detectors sense smoke or heat, manual call points let occupants raise the alarm, and sounders, bells or visual alarm devices warn everyone in the building. Relays, such as the C-TEC 24V relay on a plate, can interface the panel with other plant, for example to release door holders or shut down ventilation where the design calls for it.

Specifying a system

System category and coverage are normally determined by a fire risk assessment, the building's use and the applicable standards, commonly BS 5839-1 for non-domestic premises. Consider the number of zones, whether a two-wire system would save time on cabling, and how the panel will be accessed and reset. Always check current regulations and manufacturer guidance.

Installation, testing and records

Install using suitable fire-resistant cable and connect the panel supply in line with BS 7671. Weekly testing from a different call point each time is a common routine, along with periodic servicing by a competent person. For homes and small premises, standalone smoke, heat and CO alarms are usually more appropriate.

What is a manual call point?: A manual call point is a device, usually red and fitted near exits, that lets a person raise the fire alarm by pressing or breaking the front element. Resettable call points use a plastic element that can be reset with a key, avoiding glass replacement. Protective covers help prevent accidental or malicious activation.
What is a visual alarm device on a fire alarm system?: A visual alarm device (VAD) is a flashing beacon that warns occupants of a fire, often combined with a sounder. VADs help people who are deaf or hard of hearing and are useful in noisy areas where a sounder may not be heard. Coverage and positioning should follow the system design and current standards.
