Electrical Testing Equipment
Electrical testing equipment is the range of testers and detectors used to check whether a circuit or conductor is live and to confirm safe isolation before work starts. Stock includes C.K non-contact voltage detector sticks with visual and audible warning, C.K heavy-duty 100–250V AC mains tester screwdrivers and Olympic individual mainstesters.
The C.K Magma Pro tool case is also listed for keeping test kit protected. Trade account holders pay trade prices, and in-stock items ordered before 5pm on a weekday are with you next working day in NI or ROI.
How to choose electrical test and detection equipment
Testing is the step that keeps electricians safe and installations compliant. The right instrument depends on whether you are carrying out a quick check, proving isolation or completing full inspection and testing.
Types of tester
- Non-contact voltage detectors – pen-style sticks that sense AC voltage through insulation and alert with a light and beep. Ideal for a fast first check on cables, sockets and fittings.
- Mains tester screwdrivers – neon indicator screwdrivers for basic indication; useful for light tasks but not a reliable means of proving dead.
- Two-pole voltage indicators – the recommended instrument for proving dead as part of safe isolation, used with a proving unit.
- Multifunction testers – for insulation resistance, continuity, loop impedance and RCD tests during inspection and certification.
Safe isolation
Detectors are an aid, not a guarantee. Follow a recognised safe isolation procedure: isolate, lock off, prove the tester on a known source, test all conductor combinations, then re-prove the tester. Check current guidance from your industry body and the instrument manufacturer, and ensure test leads and probes meet the relevant safety standards for the category of installation.
Looking after test kit
Store instruments in a padded case, keep batteries fresh and check leads for damage before each use. Many contractors also have instruments calibrated periodically. Pair your tester with insulated hand tools from VDE screwdrivers and pliers and cutters, and keep it organised with tool storage.
