Too Bright to Sleep: Residents Battle Blinding New Street Lights in West London

Imagine trying to relax in the comfort of your own home, only to feel like you’re living on a movie set with spotlights beaming through your windows. This is the reality for residents of a street in West London, where newly installed LED street lights are causing quite a stir. Installed three weeks ago, these lights stand tall at 8 meters and illuminate more than just the streets – they’re invading the homes and lives of the people living there.

The Blinding Issue

Since installing these LED lights, residents have been resorting to extreme measures to block out the invasive brightness. Blackout blinds, black cardboard, and any other means of blocking the light have become essential tools for these residents, desperate for a good night’s sleep or a quiet evening in front of the TV.

One resident expressed frustration: “It’s like a great big spotlight beaming into your face when you’re trying to relax with your family and watch TV in the evening.” Another added that they feel like they are living in a blackout reminiscent of World War Two, cloaking their homes in darkness to escape the glare.

Council’s Response and Future Plans

Hounslow Council, responsible for the streetlight installations, has plans to continue rolling out LED street lighting throughout the borough. However, in response to the complaints, they are now considering dimming the lights to mitigate the problem (Hounslow Highways).

The core issue doesn’t seem to be the LED technology itself but rather the lack of spill light from some LED luminaires. Eddie Henry, operations manager at Southwark Council in London, explained the need for a balance: “We need a bit of spilt light so people can see as they leave the public highway and step across their gate, and it doesn’t go from being very light to completely dark very quickly” (Southwark Council).

The Technical Side of LED Lighting

LED lights are highly efficient and allow for precise direction of light. This precision is both a benefit and a drawback. In an average street, the light is directed downwards, illuminating the road effectively but leaving the surrounding areas in stark darkness. This contrast can be jarring and uncomfortable for residents (ArchDaily).

Conclusion

As Hounslow Council moves forward with its LED street lighting plans, it’s clear that adjustments are needed to address residents’ concerns. Finding the right balance between sufficient street illumination and minimal intrusion into homes. Meanwhile, the residents of this West London street continue to adapt, hoping for a solution that will restore their peace and quiet.
