Galvanised and PVC enclosures are boxes that house cable joints, terminations and control gear, protecting them from dust, moisture and accidental contact. How to choose the right enclosure
An enclosure needs to be big enough for the cables and connections inside it, tough enough for its surroundings and sealed to the right level for the environment.
Galvanised or PVC?
- Galvanised steel adaptable boxes – strong and impact resistant, ideal with steel conduit and trunking in commercial and industrial installs. Knockout versions speed up entries.
- PVC and polycarbonate junction boxes – lightweight, corrosion-free and insulating, suitable for damp areas and outdoor terminations when IP-rated.
Understanding IP ratings
The IP code shows protection against solids (first digit) and water (second digit). IP44 protects against objects over 1mm and splashing water, suiting many indoor and sheltered locations. IP56 adds dust protection and resistance to powerful water jets, making it better for exposed outdoor or washdown areas. The rating only holds if cable entries are made with suitable glands, so use matching cable glands for every entry.
Sizing and terminations
Choose a box with enough space to make connections without cramming conductors, allowing for bending radius and future additions. Junction boxes supplied with a 5 way connector are handy for quick joints, or use lever connectors or strip connectors as appropriate. Joints must remain accessible for inspection unless a maintenance-free method is used, in line with current wiring regulations.
Earthing metal enclosures
Galvanised enclosures must be connected to the protective conductor. Use the earth terminal provided and, where SWA cables enter, connect the armour via a gland earth tag. For smaller junction boxes, browse our dedicated junction boxes range.
