What is a Flexible Conduit?
A flexible conduit is a tube that keeps electrical wiring systems safe from breakages, damage, and general wear and tear. These flex conduit tubes are typically made of durable materials to withstand potential damage caused by the external environment. Flexible conduit pipes are often installed in places that have harsh turns like light fittings or water heaters. Their spiral shape allows them to snake through tight spaces easily.
Flexible conduits are most commonly made of plastic, fiber, or metal materials. It's important to note that not all flexible conduits are liquid-tight. Liquid-tight flex conduits are made of liquid-tight material that protects the enclosed wiring from moisture and water.
Flexible Conduits or Rigid Conduits?
Flex conduits are generally preferred to rigid conduits due to their ease of installation. Flexible conduit and flexible conduit glands can be bent without using heavy electrical tools, their spiral shape allows them to snake through cramped installations.
This is not to say that rigid conduit types do not come with their own advantages; they are typically tougher and more durable in the long run. Polyvinyl (PVC) is the most popular non-metal rigid conduit material.
PVC rigid conduits are lightweight, and extremely durable, providing increased protection against damage. PVC conduits are installed in open spaces as well as underground cable management systems. On the other hand, rigid metal conduits (RMC) are manufactured from stainless steel, coated steel, or aluminum. Due to their conductivity, they can also be used as grounding conductors. Of course, it is recommended that you use a grounding wire instead.
At Meteor Electrical, we offer an extensive range of plastic flexible conduits, steel flexible conduits, rigid steel conduits, plastic conduits, and a wide variety of conduit accessories. Shop online today for next-day delivery.
