Choosing relay sockets and panel components

Plug-in relays are used throughout control panels for interlocking, signal conversion and switching small loads. Mounting them in sockets keeps wiring permanent while the relay can be swapped in seconds.

Matching the socket to the relay

Relay family - sockets are designed for a specific relay range, such as MT or PT relays, and are not usually interchangeable.
Pin count - the 8 pole MT socket suits 8 pin MT relays; check the number and layout of pins.
Mounting - DIN rail sockets clip onto 35mm top hat rail alongside terminals and breakers.
Connection type - screw terminals accept a wide range of conductor sizes and are easy to inspect.
Ratings - check the socket's voltage and current ratings exceed those of the relay contacts in use.

Panel building tips

Lay out relays, terminals and contactors logically, leaving space for wiring duct and future expansion. Use retaining clips where provided so relays cannot work loose with vibration, and label each socket to match the drawings. Where a load is too heavy for a relay's contacts, switch it through a contactor instead.

Do relay sockets come with the relay?: Usually not, relay sockets are normally sold separately from the relay so you can choose the coil voltage and contact configuration you need. Make sure the relay you order belongs to the same family and pin layout as the socket, for example an 8 pin MT relay for the 8 pole MT socket.
